Head coach Matt Markowski is in his fourth season with the Fort Myers Green Wave wrestling team. A three-time Florida high school state wrestling champion and member of several sports Hall of Fames, Markowski is only in his 10th year of coaching. As a prep, the former Fort Myers High School standout was a three-time state champion and a multi-time All-American.
In his ten year coaching career, Markowski has led his teams to two top-ten finishes in the FHSAA State wrestling tournament, a Regional runner-up finish, and 2 District championships. Markowski has also produced 2 state champions, 8 state place winners, and 27 state qualifiers. He was named Coach of the Year in 2011 by the Northwest Florida Daily News and the Northwest Florida Official’s Association.
Markowski spent 2011 – 2015 years as the Head Coach at Lakeland High School. During his tenure with the Dreadnaughts, his teams compiled a 78-32 dual meet record. Markowski led the team to the 2014 3A District 6 Championship, the first such title for Lakeland in over a decade. His teams also won numerous tournament titles. During his tenure, he led 8 wrestlers to the state tournament, with one top-4 individual finish. Markowski also led 4 of his wrestlers to qualification for the national championships.
Markowski served as the head coach at Niceville High School for the 2010-11 season, recording a 15-3 (.833) dual mark. In his one season with the Eagles, Markowski led the team to the Class 2A District 1 title, Runner-up finish in 2A Region 1, and had a school-record 7 wrestlers qualify for the FHSAA State Wrestling Championships. During his tenure, 220 lber. Zach Bartleson won a state championship and was named the Northwest Florida Daily News and Northwest Florida Official’s Association Wrestler of the Year.
Prior to taking the helm in Niceville, Markowski was a head coach at Fort Myers High School (2006-2009) and an assistant coach at Darton College in Albany, GA (2009-2010). He helped guide Fort Myers to a top-ten finish (3rd) in the 2007 FHSAA State Wrestling Championships, while crowning 1 state champion and 5 state place winners. While at Darton, Markowski helped the team to a 6th place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament while crowning 1 All-American.
Since 2012, Markowski has served on numerous national coaching staffs. He was the head coach for Team Florida in the 2012 and 2013 Freestyle Junior National Duals and the head coach at the 2013 Greco Junior National Duals. He has also served as an assistant coach for Team Florida at the 2012, 2013, and 2014 Cadet National Duals, and at the Cadet/Junior National Championships. Internationally, Markowski served as an assistant coach at the Copa Sparta Cup in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2012.
Markowski was a 4-time state place winner at Fort Myers High School (1998-2001). During his time with the Greenwave, he had a career mark of 150-5 (.968), which included 2 undefeated seasons (30-0 in 1999 and 41-0 in 2001). Coach is also in numerous Hall of Fames. He is in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a recipient of the Dave Schultz Excellence Award (2001), the Fort Myers High School Athletics Hall of Fame (2010), and he was inducted into the inaugural class of the Lee County Athletic Conference Hall of Fame (2012).
The Fort Myers, Florida native was born on January 30th, 1983. He earned his B.A. degree in General Studies from the University of Northern Iowa in 2006. He and his wife, Dana, have 3 children, Marc, Ethan, and Jonathan.
